The unemployment rate was 9.7 percent in January in Turkey

In Turkey, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.5 points to 9.7 percent in January compared to the previous month.

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has announced its labor force statistics for January.

According to the Household Labor Force Survey results, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 and over decreased by 166 thousand to 3 million 424 thousand people in January 2023 compared to the previous month.

The unemployment rate decreased by 0.5 points to 9.7 percent. The unemployment rate was estimated to be 7.7 percent for men and 13.7 percent for women.

The seasonally adjusted employment rate was 48.9 percent.

The number of employed persons increased by 354 thousand to 31 million 837 thousand in January 2023 compared to the previous month, and the employment rate increased by 0.5 points to 48.9 percent. This rate was 66.9 percent for men and 31.2 percent for women.

The seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was 54.1 percent.

The labor force increased by 188 thousand to 35 million 260 thousand people in January 2023 compared to the previous month, and the labor force participation rate increased by 0.2 points to 54.1 percent. The labor force participation rate was 72.5 percent for men and 36.1 percent for women.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for young people was 20.2 percent.

The unemployment rate for young people aged 15-24 increased by 0.5 points to 20.2 percent compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate for this age group was estimated to be 16.5 percent for men and 26.6 percent for women.

The seasonally and calendar-adjusted average weekly actual working hours were 44.9 hours.

The seasonally and calendar-adjusted average weekly actual working hours of those who were employed and on duty during the reference period increased by 0.7 hours to 44.9 hours in January 2023 compared to the previous month.

The seasonally adjusted underemployment rate was 21.9 percent.

The underemployment rate, which includes time-related underemployment, potential labor force, and unemployed persons, increased by 0.6 points to 21.9 percent in January 2023 compared to the previous month. The integrated rate of time-related underemployment and unemployed persons was 15.3 percent, while the integrated rate of potential labor force and unemployed persons was estimated to be 16.7 percent.
